ProGen Update

It's been a while since I've written a ProGen update. The group I am in, ProGen14, is about half way through the program now. It's hard to believe. Time has flown by! In the last few months we have analyzed documents, written research reports, written business plans and much more.

The monthly assignments have been rigorous and I am finding I approach problems and think them through very differently now. Having to read and provide feedback on each other's assignments has been invaluable not only for the feedback we receive on our own work but what we learn by providing input on our colleague's projects.

ProGen is a huge commitment but the relationships we have developed with our group members (in addition to the assignments) has made it all worthwhile, and then some. If you are considering joining, I highly recommend it. Just make sure you can commit your time for the duration.

A New iPad

Last month I posed a question over on the Technology for Genealogy Facebook page regarding which tablet to purchase. I really was intending to get an Android figuring it would be easier to use the Office apps like OneNote, Word and Excel (and because of the hopefully lower cost). After a wonderful discussion, and a purely coincidental blog post the same day over at Reflections From the Fence, my genea fb freinds convinced me go get an iPad.

OK, deep down inside I guess I really wanted an iPad.

I've had it for 3 weeks now and am loving it but there is still some adjustments for this windows based geek. For example, how the heck do you right click on an ipad?

Dating an Old Photo - Part 2

Readers never disappoint! I've received some great feedback on my request for help in Dating an Old Photo. Thank you Wonderful Readers!

I didn't give much information because I didn't want to bias anyone and I still don't. The suspicion is this picture may have been taken in the early-mid 1890s. We are trying to determine when the woman, Lucinda Ballenger, died and dating this picture may help.

Here are some other questions regarding this photo:

• How old do William and Lucinda look to be?
• Is it possible the picture was taken years earlier and reprinted?
• Input on dating their clothing would be appreciated (I'm terrible with that).

Again, thanks for all your input! Hopefully we can get a final answer as to when Lucinda died. I'll present more information in future posts.

Dating an Old Photo. Help!

Is anyone up for a photo analysis session? I've written about William H. and Lucinda Ballenger before. Lately, I've been trying to prove Lucinda's date of death (which we'll discuss in another post). The existence of this picture might be crucial in establishing whether Lucinda was alive at a particular point. It's time to analyze it in detail to attempt to put a date to it.

Now I know many of you are way better at dating old pictures than I am. So I put it to you. Here are a few points to consider:

• The card the picture is mounted on measures 4.25 x 6.5 inches.
• The card has a gold border along the edge and is less than 1/16 of an inch.
• The card has rounded corners.
• The paper the photo printed on is fairly thin and has a sheen.
• Coloring of the picture is kind of a grayish greenish or gray yellowish.
• The photographer is Dudley of Boulder, Colorado.

I'll provide more information in another post after getting some feedback. I don't want to bias anyone with commentary.

What do you think? When was this taken? I'll be eternally grateful for your help.

Still Out There in Blogger Land...

...although you wouldn't know it. I can't believe a month has gone by and I haven't posted! Let's just say it's been a busy and fun summer. We visited our oldest daughter, took a real vacation (read that to mean non-softball related) and took another cross country drive to move youngest daughter in for summer school. In between, it's been unpack, do laundry, pay bills, do ProGen assignments, repack and repeat. Yeah, it's been busy but I'm hanging in there and I hope you are too!

We are going to take a little summer break here on the 21st Century Organized Family Historian. There is just way too much fun summer stuff going on. I'm distracted from organizing!
